3.0/51 Reviews

The New England Wine Academy (NEWA), initially established as the Vintage Wine School in 2005, has evolved significantly over the years. Rebranded in 2018, NEWA, under the leadership of Brian Mitchell, has become a prominent Connecticut-based WSET affiliate program. Mitchell’s vision and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the academy into a center of excellence for wine and spirits education.

Brian Mitchell, Founder

Brian Mitchell, the driving force behind NEWA, has a clear mission: to make drinks education accessible and enjoyable for everyone. With over 25 years of experience in the beverage industry, Mitchell’s journey from a bartender to a renowned educator and beverage program director is nothing short of inspiring. His expertise is evident in his role as the overseer of the beverage program for eleven restaurants across three states, where he manages a diverse and extensive range of beverages.

Mitchell’s approach to education is rooted in his belief that learning about wine and spirits should be informative and engaging. This philosophy is the cornerstone of NEWA, where the goal is to elevate the theoretical knowledge and the tasting skills of wine drinkers and professionals alike.

Comprehensive Sommelier Course Offerings

NEWA’s course offerings reflect its commitment to providing a well-rounded education in wine and spirits. The academy offers a variety of courses, including:

  • WSET Level 1, 2, and 3 Awards in Wine
  • WSET Level 1 and 2 Awards in Spirits
  • WSET Level 1 Award in Sake
  • WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits

These globally recognized WSET courses are complemented by specialized Academy Classes, focusing on specific wine regions and topics, and the Pro Series seminars for industry professionals. NEWA also provides branded courses, consulting, and program guidance, catering to a wide range of needs and interests.

A Team of Expert Educators

The success of NEWA is also attributed to its team of associate educators, including industry experts like Elayne Duff and Deborah Bazzano-Banhos. Their extensive experience and passion for teaching further enrich the learning experience at NEWA.

The New England Wine Academy, from its inception as the Vintage Wine School to its current status as a leading wine education center, reflects Brian Mitchell’s vision of making wine education enjoyable and accessible. At NEWA, students are not just learning about wine and spirits; they are being equipped with the skills and knowledge to appreciate and excel in the beverage industry. Whether you are a casual wine enthusiast or a professional looking to enhance your skills, NEWA offers a comprehensive and engaging educational experience.
